Herman Charles Bosman's famous inimitable character, Oom Schalk Lourens rides into Asbos Theatre in Die Wilgers to tell a few stories. Those who have seen Cape Town actor, David Muller aka Oom Schalk have been demanding that he visit the City of Tshwane with his single-hander, Oom Schalk, from the Heart. The show will be on at the Asbos Theatre for one show only on Saturday October 24th
Directed by Celia Musikanth, David Muller continues with the classic tradition of story-telling where Percy Sieff and Patrick Mynhardt left off. Muller inhabits the Schalk Lourens character in telling the Herman Charles Bosman’s stories from the heart. Included are the favorites, "In the Withaak’s Shade", Schalk’s close encounter with a leopard; "A Bekkersdal Marathon", about a zealous dominee and his trance in the pulpit and "Willem Prinsloo’s Peach Brandy", when some freshly picked Zeerust roses become useful to a young woman. From Durban to Grahamstown to Cape Town Oom Schalk, from the Heart has delighted critics and audiences alike. And, to quote Bosman, he wrote Afrikaans in English so the stories will please everyone, old and young.
“A lucky patron stands to walk away with an anthology of some Bosman’s short stories,” Muller adds, “and those in the front row may be refreshed with a little of Schalk’s favorite drink.”
