To celebrate Official Mandela Day our green and gold national team, the National Youth Orchestra, will perform a grand benefit concert 15:00 on 17 July, hosted by the Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel. Included in the programme is Mahler’s transformative Fifth Symphony, and Benjamin Britten’s seldom-heard Double Concerto for Violin and Viola, written when the composer was just eighteen. The orchestra will be lead by the sensational Polish conductor, Ewa Strusinska.
Soloists for the concerto, drawn from within the orchestra's ranks, are: Sammy Durrant (van Gysen) (violin, Cape Town), Jonathan Mayer (violin, Johannesburg), Jeffrey Armstrong (violin, Cape Town), Erin Louise Torres (viola, Cape Town), Nicholas James Fidler (viola, Port Elizabeth) and Kgaugelo Mpyane (viola, Pretoria).
Tickets include interval drinks and canapés prepared by the hotel’s chefs. The concert is generously supported by the National Lotteries Commission, the Department of Arts and Culture, the Britten-Pears Foundation and Fine Music Radio. Proceeds from the concert will go towards the National Youth Orchestra’s work with South Africa’s most talented young musicians.
