The CityVarsity Acting for Camera department presents an exciting new double-bill.
Both original productions are written, directed and performed by third year Acting students.
Crown:
Wear your hair as your crown.
What is “good” hair? Inspired by the curlism movement, where natural hair is celebrated and societal expectations around hair texture are questioned, Crown examines how we’re taught to think and talk about hair.
In Crown, young woman from different contexts in Cape Town share personal stories about their hair. From the classroom to the salon, magazines to parties, they have all been told how their hair should and shouldn’t be worn. Crown tries to deconstruct these lessons, exploring the deeply rooted prejudice that lies beneath them.
Bus Bingo:
“Can I sit here?”
“Can I put my bag here?”
“Can I take up this space?”
Bus Bingo explores the complicated politics of public transport in Cape Town. Taking place over one work week, it follows a group of commuters on their early-morning trips into the city. The play offers a close look at the unspoken rules of public transport, examining how people react when they’re forced into a confined space with each other. In Bus Bingo, the bus becomes a micro-landscape of South Africa, transporting passengers from many different backgrounds: teachers, students, single parents, business people, and more. Ultimately, dealing with public transport can be like playing bingo – you never quite know what to expect.
Both Crown and Bus Bingo question the ways in which we move through the world, asking us to consider how we treat each other and how we treat ourselves.
Both plays will show with a brief interval between.
28, 29, and 30 June @ 19.30
1 July @ 14:00.
