Alis (2022)

Directed by Nicolas van Hemelryck & Clare Weiskopf. Documentary. Dur: 1hr 24mins.

At a teenage drop-in center in Colombia, directors Clare Weiskopf and Nicolas van Hemelryck (Amazona) ask a group of young women to close their eyes and imagine the story of a fictional classmate named Alis. Like them, Alis’ story begins on the streets of Bogotá. Alis becomes their blank canvas, a projection of their past experiences and selves. With a sensitive and compassionate lens, the directors show how the girls’ initial fiction begins to weave itself into reality, and how distance has provided them with a moment to step outside themselves and see their own experiences through a different lens. As they gently open their eyes, we come to know these young women deeply, and see their perseverance to embrace a brighter future.
