Islandia (Iceland)

Directed by Ina Mayushin. Drama. Dur 1hr 17mins.

Set in the 1950s, the film follows Emilia, a young widow with two small daughters in Iquitos, who sails up the Amazon toward Islandia, a place she imagines as a promised land of new opportunities. Low river levels force her to stay in Santos, a small settlement on the border of Peru, Colombia and Brazil, where she faces many obstacles while trying to found a school and ends up becoming the village's first teacher. The story suggests that her own "Islandia" was closer than she believed.
