ACT Cape Town presents Girls just want to have fun, an original production devised by the final year students under mentorship of coach Nicola Hanekom.
This memory play explores how a group of strangers’ lives become intertwined and turned upside down by the multi-tool of drugs in sport, GHB. ‘I didn’t mention the bad bad feeling in my stomach. Why would I? We got out of my car and she was wearing her killer heels and a miniskirt and a sequined top. And it was a warm night in Cape Town in the summer. A night where anything could happen.’
Director’s note: This year I again had the pleasure of working with our talented final year students. We took the risk of making an original work in stead of performing an existing script. There’s a certain amount of chutzpah required to put all the chips on your own creativity and not on a tried and tested text. Perhaps that is what being young is about, taking the risk of falling flat on your face, or flying. Or perhaps the greatest learning opportunity is about getting to know and trusting the artist inside you. All we know is, there was nothing and now there is something. It is our gift to the audience.
