Grease (1978) is an American musical romantic comedy film, directed by Randal Kleiser in his feature debut.

Written by Bronté Woodard, with an adaptation by co-producer Allan Carr, it is based on the 1972 stage musical by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey.

The film follows greaser Danny Zuko (John Travolta) and Australian transfer student Sandy Olsson (Olivia Newton-John) as they rekindle their summer romance.

Released on 16 June 1978 by Paramount Pictures, Grease was both a critical and commercial success, becoming the highest-grossing musical film of its time.

Its soundtrack was the second best-selling album of 1978 in the United States, behind Saturday Night Fever, which also starred Travolta.

The song Hopelessly Devoted to You was nominated for an Academy Award, and the film received five Golden Globe nominations, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. In 2020, Grease was added to the United States National Film Registry for its cultural, historical, and aesthetic significance.
