JAZZ AT THE BIOSCOPE presents an eclectic program that reflects the vibrancy and diversity of Johannesburg’s jazz scene. Curated by award winning musician Mandla Mlangeni , the series brings together established musicians and emerging voices, weaving traditional jazz idioms with contemporary sounds, experimental improvisation, and cross-genre collaborations. Each performance is designed to surprise and engage audiences, offering a kaleidoscope of styles that range from soulful ballads to avant-garde explorations. By situating these performances in The Bioscope Independent Cinema, the program embraces an intimate setting that allows audiences to experience jazz as both a communal and deeply personal art form.

Mthunzi Mvubu & The Abathwebuli Trio are a powerhouse in South Africa’s contemporary jazz scene, blending ancestral African rhythms with modern improvisation. Led by saxophonist and flautist Mthunzi Mvubu.The Abathwebuli Trio brings together some of South Africa’s most sought-after musicians, combining their talents to weave a sonic tapestry of African rhythms and ancestral chants. Their music channels the energy of tradition while embracing contemporary creativity, resulting in a vibrant and captivating live experience.
On the 2nd of April Mthunzi Mvubu & The Abathwebuli Trio will present Isidlo featuring bassist Gally Ngoveni as part of Jazz at The Bioscope Series. Abathwebuli, evokes the idea of “weavers,” reflecting how they interlace African rhythms, chants, and improvisation into a sonic tapestry. Their electric performances have been described as spiritually charged and rhythmically dynamic, channelling both tradition and innovation.
