Gutted: The Fight of Kalk Bay Fishers
Dir. Angelo Louw, Malcolm Rainers
Documentary || 9m || South Africa
The fishermen and women processors of Kalk Bay share a special connection with the sea, as fishing is inherently part of their culture and heritage - a tradition passed on from one generation to the next. The threat of harmful industrial fishing has lead to the fast deterioration of traditional fishing communities on the Cape Flats, driving them into economic and social despair.
Beyond the Fence
Dir. Tessa Barlin
Documentary || 12m || South Africa
Growing up in South Africa can mean being born into a country rich in wildlife and yet never being given the chance to experience the beauty of it for yourself. But Queen, Rifumo and Wisani have set out the change this. Armed with a camera, the trio aim to rise above their difficult pasts and “reframe” the narrative of wildlife conservation, which has long since had a reputation for being white dominated. The trio have one goal - to inspire the youth from their community to become the next generation of eco-warriors.
With an aim to shift perspectives, the audience is probed to revisit their own ideas of what conservation means in this day and age. How can people care for nature when they don’t have access to it?
Part of the Pack
Dir. Emily Cross
Documentary || 10m || South Africa
This film looks at what makes the African Wild Dog, one of earth's oldest canines, so unique and gives insight into their social dynamics and hunting techniques as a pack. The doccie profiles the organisations assisting and monitoring this species and we meet the people who dedicate their lives to make a difference to this endangered animal. This film brings light on the silent epidemic this species is facing.
Women Hold Up The Sky
Dir. Yaba Badoe, Sharon Farr, Nelson Makengo
Documentary || 36m || Africa/SA
Journeying between South Africa, Uganda and the DRC, this documentary reveals the experiences and activism of women in three African countries but tells a much bigger story of the ongoing exploitation of natural resources and marginalisation of poor communities, particularly women.
Women Hold Up the Sky tells the story of how women activists affected by mining and other forms of large-scale extractives in South Africa, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) are deeply engaged in resistance and an active struggle to take back control of their land, their rights, their bodies and their lives.
