Half The Sky + 4 Female BRICS Directors

Directed by: Daniela Thomas, Elizaveta Stishova, Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari, Sara Blecher / 99min

Half the Sky consists of short films, directed by women, that approach feminism with different narratives from various countries.

Maria Helena lives in São Paulo and needs to face a journey back to her home town, the state of Minas Gerais, where her family, that forsook her, lives. In a rural region in Russia, Valentina, a middle-aged woman, causes furor when she begins a relationship with an inmate via internet. After a home incident, the Indian Seema, who has always been dedicated to her husband, children and in-laws, destabilizes her family when she announces that she wants a break from domestic responsibilities. In China, the widow Shuxian Qin plans a dinner for her daughter, Xiaodan, to accept her new boyfriend. In the World Rowing Championship, an unknown south-african athlete has a smashing victory, but the event’s organization and opponents question if she really is a woman and if she should be competing in the female category.
