SOUTH AFRICAN SHORT FICTION

Make Up and Cigarettes

Dir: Zwo Farisani / 18min 30s

This story ends and begins in love. Everything else in between is merely meant to prepare us for it. Love between a man and a woman, who despite very different life experiences, have still managed to look beyond each other’s circumstances to see the humanity within the other.

It’s Only True Love

Dir: Joshua Magor / 22min

It is modern day South African. The country ails from social unrest and constant protests. Amanda, a young woman from Mpophomeni Township, is living through this difficult time while struggling to take care of her sick mother and overcoming the trauma of a sexual assault.

Keys of Life

Dir: Vusi Magubane / 12min 45s

A young girl battles against the odds of an adult reality stuck in mourning by using the magic of her piano playing talents to bring back her missing father, a trapped illegal miner.

Mma Moeketsi

Dir: Rea Moeti / 20min

Based on a true story, Mma Moeketsi is a domestic worker from rural Lesotho working for a suburban family in Johannesburg. Her son Moeketsi is an illegal miner at the Marikana Platinum Mine, North West of South Africa. In the wake of the wage increase strike from 15 August 2012, Moeketsi’s phone is off and he is nowhere to be found. Mma Moeketsi can do nothing but wait pensively for her son to call her or at least pick up her phone calls.
