FILM: Al-Nakba: The Palestinian Catastrophe (followed by open discussion)

Directed by Rawan Damen. Documentary. Dur 1hr 34mins.

Annually on May 15, people globally commemorate the Nakba or the ‘catastrophe’. From 1947 to 1949, 531 towns and cities were destroyed by Israeli militias. Of the 1.4 million-strong Palestinian population at the time, 800,000 were expelled and not allowed to return to their land; the massacres of families and towns left enduring scars on the survivors.  It is estimated that there are over 9 million Palestinian refugees scattered around the world.  For many, the Nakba continues today and takes on new significance as Israel commits a genocide of the 2.3 million inhabitants of the Gaza Strip.

This documentary series screened by Al-Jazeera has won many international awards and has been well received at festivals throughout the world. We will be screening Episodes 3 and 4 of this four-part series.
