The Mimi Coertse Scholarship Competition was originally established at the University of Pretoria in 1959 to give recognition to the remarkable achievements of Kammersängerin Mimi Coertse as an opera singer.  The current purpose of the scholarship is to provide financial aid to singers from the Gauteng region who are no older than 30 to further their studies at a tertiary institution.

The Music Department of the University of Pretoria awards this scholarship bi-annually in the form of a singing competition for young classical singers. A panel of adjudicators is appointed by the University of Pretoria to judge the singers.
Previous winners of the Mimi Coertse Scholarship such as Gert Potgieter (1960), Hans van Heerden (1961), Carla Pohl (1966), Rouel Beukes (1980) and Michelle Breedt (1986) established themselves as leading opera singers. The most recent recipients of the scholarship (2013), soprano Goitsemang Lehobye  and tenor Levy Sekgapane are fast making names for themselves on international and South African stages.

The value of the first prize for 2017 is R15,000 (fifteen thousand rand) for one year. A further prize  may be awarded to a finalist who is a singing student at the University of Pretoria.

The winner of the R15,000 prize money of the 2017 Mimi Coertse Singing Competition will be announced at the Final Round Tuesday 15 August at 12:30 at the Musaion Theatre of the University of Pretoria.
