NWU Symphony Orchestra presents "Beyond the Horizon"

Explore what’s Beyond the Horizon with the NWU Symphony Orchestra on 15 August at 19:00 in NG Miederpark Church! Bringing together celebrated classical works and music from some of the most memorable films and television series of recent decades, the programme explores courage, sacrifice, adventure, memory and the enduring human desire to look beyond the familiar.

We start with the Intermezzo from Pietro Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana. One of the most beloved orchestral interludes in the operatic repertoire, its expansive melody and deeply expressive character evoke hope, longing and the promise of something beyond the horizon. We are transported across oceans through the sweeping and emotional music from Titanic with soprano soloist Annemarie van der Westhuizen. This is followed by the Ballet Music from Charles Gounod’s opera Faust, with graceful melodies, lively dances, and brilliant orchestral writing; this music captures a world of splendour, fantasy, and theatrical excitement.

We visit Mulan, celebrating bravery, identity and the courage to follow one’s own path. The moving score from Band of Brothers honours friendship, loyalty and sacrifice in the face of extraordinary adversity, before revisiting the warmth, nostalgia and gentle resilience of Forrest Gump. The orchestra will enter the dramatic world of Game of Thrones, with its powerful themes of conflict, destiny and ambition.
