STEAK ’n ALE PART ONE: THE REVIVAL

The artists. The music. The memories. All back on one stage.
Proudly presented by The Hangout and The Troyeville, this first of three reunion shows brings Gian Groen, Gordon’s Suitcase and Diff-Olie together for an afternoon celebrating the music and the people who made Steak ’n Ale unforgettable.
Back on stage
Gian Groen: guitar, harmonica, original Afrikaans songs and much-loved lyrics, all delivered with a generous dose of alternative rock ’n’ roll poetry.
Gordon’s Suitcase: featuring Illimar Neitz on guitar, Greg Georgiades on bass guitar, oud and bouzouki, Jaco Loots on drums, and Chris van der Walt on bass guitar. Expect an adventurous journey through jazz, fusion and instrumental brilliance.
Diff-Olie: The return of Pretoria’s Afrikaans rock royalty — featuring the unmistakable voice of Stean van der Walt on Acoustic Guitar and Anton van Rooyen (Percussion), Mauritz Roos (Bass Guitar), Dale McHardy (Electric Guitar), bringing their raw Afrikaans alternative rock energy back to the stage.
More than a venue. A shared history.
For Stean, who helped shape those nights as both a performer and Steakies’ resident sound engineer, the reunion brings together life on stage and behind the mixing desk. Illimar and Gordon’s Suitcase says, it recalls a place where musicians could experiment, connect and share their music with people who appreciated the journey. And as Gian puts it: “Steak ’n Ale became part of who I am during the formative years of my music career — for reasons that went far beyond its four walls. A home for rock ’n’ roll poetry. For songs with stories to tell. For artists who had something to say. For people who came to listen but often stayed longer than they had planned.”
Whether you remember the band nights, pub lunches, drinks with the regulars, Laaste Kabaal or poetry evenings — or simply share a love of alternative music — you are invited.
