“A FILM ABOUT A BAND WHO CAPTURED THE IMAGINATION OF A GENERATION”

Thinking Owl Films, in association with Sony Music Entertainment Africa, have announced the release of an exciting new documentary film which will see The Springbok Nude Girls explode onto South African stage and screen for 2 exclusive film premiers followed by live performances.

The South African premier of 'Springbok Nude Girls', a film directed and produced by Michelle Pretorius, is set to happen on 4 June, 2016 at The Labia Theater in Cape Town and will be followed with a live performance by the band at The Assembly. The Springbok Nude Girls will be joined on stage at The Assembly by special guests, Retro Dizzy and Bam Bam Brown.

On 18th June 2016, there will be a second screening of the film, here at The Bioscope, followed with a live performance by the band at The Goodluck Bar. The Springbok Nude Girls will be joined on stage at The Good Luck Bar by special guests, Art Snakes and Ruff Majik.

Additional screenings will be held at The Bioscope from 20-22 June, and 27 - 29 June at 7:30pm

Through a series of serendipitous events in the early 90’s in the small wine making town of Stellenbosch, Arno Carstens, Theo Crous, Adriaan Brand, Arno Blumer and Francois Kruger became The Springbok Nude Girls. Little did they know that they would go on to become one of the most loved rock bands South Africa has ever seen,  known for their high energy stage antics and unique musical sound which combines Punk, Reggae, Scat, Metal, Funk and Jazz.

The film tells the story of these early beginnings, touching on the crippling censorship of that time, and then the liberation of 1994 and how, for these kids, there was finally freedom in music. Springbok Nude Girls uses archived performance and interview footage from the last two decades to illustrate the band’s compelling story and includes interviews with a range of contemporary South African musicians, commentators, journalists and music industry insiders to tell the story of this roller coaster ride. The film was made possible through generous donations from the fan based crowdfunding website Thundafund as well as investment from Mount Gay Rum SA and The National Film and Video Fund of South Africa.

"As one of the new South Africa's first original rock bands, the Springbok Nude Girls are a legend to this day. Theirs is a story of breaking boundaries and carving the way for others to follow, and it’s no exaggeration to say their unique and original sound inspired a generation. So it was only fitting for Mount Gay rum to get involved in both the film and the launch events – the original and oldest rum, handcrafted in Barbados using the finest ingredients, and the rum that also carved the way for others to follow. We’ll be telling both of our stories in some pop-up events over the next few months, so watch this space.”
