The Gods Must Be Crazy (1980) is a comedy film written, produced, edited, and directed by Jamie Uys.

A collaboration between South Africa and Botswana, it is the first in The Gods Must Be Crazy series.

Set in Southern Africa, the story follows Xi, a Kalahari hunter-gatherer, played by Namibian San farmer Nǃxau ǂToma. When his tribe discovers a glass Coca-Cola bottle dropped from an aeroplane, they believe it to be a divine gift. Xi embarks on a journey to return the object to the gods, crossing paths with a biologist (Marius Weyers), a schoolteacher (Sandra Prinsloo), and a group of guerrilla terrorists.

Released in South Africa on 10 September 1980 by Ster-Kinekor, the film broke box office records, becoming the most commercially successful South African production at the time.

It gained international acclaim, though success in the United States came later, with a 1984 re-release by 20th Century Fox, featuring English dubbing over the original Afrikaans dialogue.
