THE LONG TAKE FILM CLUB

Films worth thinking about. People worth talking to. Monthly.

We screen standout cinema you won’t find elsewhere, then discuss it properly over beer and pizza. Curated by film curator and critic Deniz Sertkol and François Smit—who’ve spent their careers finding films that matter.

Not film theory. Just films that deserve your full attention, and conversations with people who give them exactly that. Monthly screenings for members and friends at The Bioscope.

Beyond Graceland

We’ve spent months looking outward. July and August, we look home.

Beyond Graceland (2025), directed by Mpumi “Supa” Mbele, traces Joseph Shabalala and Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s journey from rural South Africa to global fame via Paul Simon’s Graceland — five years in the making, with rare Abbey Road footage and voices including Paul Simon, Dolly Parton, Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah.

Producer Carolyn Carew will be present for a conversation after the screening.

This closes out our “South African films you missed” season — and comes hot on the heels of Black Burns Fast on 7 August. Two Long Takes in one month. We’re not sure it’ll happen again, so we’re making the most of it.

The Bioscope has step-free access via the Stanley Ave entrance—let us know in advance if you need assistance arranging this.

First starts at 7pm. Courtyard discussion over pizza and beers to follow.
