Black Burns Fast, with Mirror Mirror (Short)
After a short winter break, The Long Take Film Club is back and in full force with local flavors and a very special screening of Black Burns Fast. Joburg based director Sandulela Asanda’s debut feature has just emerged out of the festival circuit and we‘re showing it alongside her acclaimed short Mirror Mirror (2023), followed by a Q&A with the director.
Black Burns Fast is set inside a prestigious, conservative Christian girls' boarding school, where scholarship student Luthando has her life perfectly ordered—until the arrival of charismatic Ayanda tips everything sideways. The tender yet fierce coming-of-age story knowingly echoes the Hollywood high-school canon (Booksmart, Mean Girls, Bottoms) while staying rooted in a distinctly post-apartheid South African setting, tracing race, class and first love inside an institution still clinging to old hierarchies.
Seen together, short and feature trace one filmmaker's growing confidence in telling stories where queerness is claimed, not endured and joy isn't a naive choice but a deliberate one.
Stick around after for our exclusive Q&A with Sandulela Asanda and don’t forget to treat yourself with popcorn, pizza, beers - and club dachshund Potlood.
The Bioscope has step-free access via the Stanley Ave entrance—let us know in advance if you need assistance arranging this.
Ag shem, some of us were never going to fit the uniform properly.
First film starts at 7pm. Courtyard discussion over pizza and beers to follow.
