Many philosophers have written about films. Gilles Deleuze famously wrote two volumes on cinema, arguing that is a “form of thought,” by which he means that film does not simply demonstrate philosophical themes and issues, but are themselves visual philosophies.
The aim of the Philosophy Film Club is to bridge theory and practice by screening films, followed by a discussion led by a local philosopher.

In November, we will screen the Columbian film, Embrace of the Serpent (2015), written and directed by Ciro Guerra. The film is a mix of visual splendour, psychedelic / Shamanic encounters and the darker side of the missionary culture. The screening will be followed by a discussion led by Prof. Chantelle Gray (UJ).
Students pay R40, all other members of public pay only R80.
