111D Falling Leaves Friday 5th July – Saturday 6

Marilyn lives in Port Elizabeth, began teaching quilt-making techniques in 1988 and has won multiple 
major awards for her quilts. She has no formal art training but developed her own style of quiltmaking by experimenting with fabric paints, machine appliqué, various ways of machine and hand 
embroidery and quilting. She is a Master Quilter, SAQG Recommended Teacher, recipient of the 
SAQG Pro Dedicate service award and was inducted into the SAQG Hall of Fame in 2019. She also 
paints fat quarters which she sells under the ‘Brush Rags’ label.



DETAILED COURSE DESCRIPTION:
A small piece of fibre art of fallen leaves under trees will be created. Students will make their own 
patterns from a picture provided in the workshop. The leaves will be created using 3D techniques 
and assembled to recreate the image. Students will learn how to use Stitch & Tear, Avalon Plus 
Stabilizer and couching of threads. The last part of the workshop will be to block the finished fibre 
art piece onto an artist canvas.

Student Requirements:
10” x 10” artist canvas (25.5cm x 25.5cm)
30cm x 30cm dark brown cotton fabric (visible soil)
30cm x 30cm Loomtex batting
30cm x 30cm backing fabric
40cm x 40cm cotton fabric to cover artist canvas, complementary to top section as it will be visible 
on the sides and back of the canvas
Dark brown quilting or normal stitching thread to match the dark brown fabric
30cm x 90cm lightweight appliqué paper
Cotton scraps in matching colours of autumn leaves in picture. Hand-dyed fabrics are an excellent 
choice.
Matching sewing threads for fabric scraps to stitch the leaves
Matching thread to backing fabric for bobbin
Thin chiffon in lighter shade than background colour – 25cm strip
15cm Machine embroidery hoop.
Perlé no 8 embroidery threads in same shades as cotton scraps
HB pencil, pen, notebook, sharpener, eraser, blue washout marker and/or white chalk marker
Black Artline 700 koki pen
Scissors – paper, fabric and embroidery with very sharp points
Tweezers (if you have)
Teflon sheet
Sewing machine with all accessories, machine clean and oiled
