Tilly de Harde
Session: 1 x 3hr

Tilly is a fibre artist and teacher who enjoys discovering new and innovative techniques to create her
art. She refines her experiments so that they become easy to share with her students. As a multiaward-winning Master Quilter, Tilly aims to help quilters and artists alike to expand their knowledge
and have the confidence to create without the fear that sometimes goes hand-in-hand with trying
out new things. Let Tilly show you the easy way to create your own art!

Student Requirements:
Please note that you have to bring your own reference picture of your favourite butterfly.
Your picture is only for yourself to choose your embroidery threads. I'm giving you a
pattern/picture in black and white which you are going to trace and 'colour in', using your sewing
machine and your picture as reference for the colours. Your picture can be whatever size is
comfortable for you to work with. Decide on one and choose your colours accordingly. The List of
Requirements will not tell you which colours to bring.
Sewing machine in good working order – feed dogs must be able to be dropped or covered
Extension table
Extension cord and adaptor
Embroidery hoop. You cannot do this class without an embroidery hoop. (I used one that has a
diameter of 13cm but a 22 or 25cm one should also work - not bigger than that)
Basic sewing supplies
Small sharp scissors
Masking tape
Look at your reference picture and choose machine embroidery threads that are similar in colour to
what is on the photograph. Bring a variety of machine embroidery threads in every colour that you
see in the photo. Shading is important so if you for instance have dark green, bring two or three
shades of green. The same with the other colours. I’m going to show you how to shade.
Bring more threads than you think you need
Fill a bobbin with a neutral colour and one with black (it is a good idea to use a fine thread in the
bobbin but if you don’t have, don’t worry too much about it)
Black machine embroidery thread
FEET: Open toe embroidery foot/darning foot
NEEDLES: Universal 90 or Topstitch 90 or Cordonnet 90
