316S Optical Illusion/Transparency Sunday 7th July
Tilly de Harde
Session: 2 x 3hr
Level: Intermediate
Workshop Type: Sewing Machine

Tilly is a fibre artist and teacher who enjoys discovering new and innovative techniques to create her
art. She refines her experiments so that they become easy to share with her students. As a multiaward-winning Master Quilter, Tilly aims to help quilters and artists alike to expand their knowledge
and have the confidence to create without the fear that sometimes goes hand-in-hand with trying
out new things. Let Tilly show you the easy way to create your own art!

DETAILED COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Using a single piece of fabric, Tilly is going to show you how to create the fascinating transparent
effect that this art quilt is named after. You will have a completed artwork with a beautiful
silhouette of your choice by the end of the day. You will receive a set of extensive class notes.
Cost of Kit: R235
Detailed Contents of Kit:
100% Batik Cotton Fabric
Applifuse
Baking paper

Student Requirements:
Sewing machine in good working order with extension table – feed dogs must be able to be dropped
or covered
Extension cord and adaptor
Long quilting ruler
Rotary cutter (sharp blade)
Cutting mat, preferably not too big. The one where you can cut a fat quarter on works the best.
Masking tape
Teflon sheet (must have)
Temporary ironing board (piece of polystyrene wrapped in an old towel) and iron.
Basic sewing supplies

FABRIC:
Fat quarter (you will not know what colour your kit is going to be so bring a neutral sort of darker
colour fat quarter (for the backing)
Two pieces of batting (Loomtex - this is the very common, thin, synthetic batting that we find
everywhere) a bit bigger than a fat quarter
Fat quarter black (or very dark solid colour) 100% cotton for the silhouette

THREADS:
Bring a variety of variegated machine embroidery threads (as you don’t know what your kit is going
to look like) if you have. If you don’t have any, a plain machine embroidery thread will also work.
Bring more threads rather than less!
Black (or the same dark colour that you are going to do your silhouette in) machine embroidery
thread.
An empty bobbin.
Neutral colour all-purpose thread (not sure if we will get this far in class but this is for the facing.

FEET:
Walking foot. (Must have unless your machine has the dual feed system)
Open toe embroidery foot/darning foot

NEEDLES:
I like my Jeans needles and for this appliqué, I like using a size 80 Jeans needle but you can use
whatever you feel comfortable with.
Universal 90

OTHER:
A water-soluble pen (the turquoise one works well).
A marking instrument to draw on dark fabric.
A picture of a silhouette of your choice. Any silhouette that will fit in on a quilt about 30cm X 45cm.
Think of something easy like a flower, or a bird, butterfly, profile of a person – anything that will be
easy for you to do in class.
Spray glue and a couple of quilting safety pins.
Basic sewing supplies.
